Carpentry & painting · Greater Boston

The trim gets built. The paint is what makes it last.

Casing, base, crown, built-ins and doors, scribed to walls that haven't been square since they were framed by hand — then patched, sanded, caulked, primed and finished in two coats of a premium paint. One crew runs both, which is the only way the carpentry and the paint line actually agree with each other.

Scope of work

What happens before the first coat — and what gets built first

Most of a painting estimate is prep hours, and most of a carpentry estimate is scribing and fitting. Here is exactly what those hours buy, so you can compare our number to anyone else's honestly.

Scope of work

11 items · rev. 2026

Trim & finish carpentry

Casing, base and crown scribed to walls that were built by hand a century ago and have never been straight since, plus door hanging, hardware and custom millwork runs.

Carpentry

Custom built-ins & shelving

Bookcases, mudroom benches, closet systems and mantels built to the room's actual dimensions rather than ordered off a shelf and forced to fit.

Carpentry

Exterior carpentry & rot repair

Fascia, soffit, rake boards and window trim repaired or replaced before paint goes anywhere near them — painting over rotten wood just hides the problem for a season.

Carpentry

Protection and masking

Floors covered, furniture moved to the middle and wrapped, fixtures and hardware removed rather than taped around, and hard lines masked at every edge.

Prep

Wash and de-gloss

Kitchen and bath walls get degreased, exteriors get washed. Paint doesn't bond to grease, chalk or mildew, and it will tell you so within a year.

Prep

Patch and skim

Nail pops reset, cracks cut out and taped rather than smeared, dents filled, then sanded flat and dusted before priming.

Prep

Caulk and seal

Trim-to-wall, casing joints and exterior seams caulked with a paintable sealant. This is the single line most crews skip and the first one that opens.

Prep

Spot and full prime

Bare wood, patched compound, new trim, stains and any big colour change get the right primer for the substrate — not a coat of finish paint pretending to be one.

Prep

Finish coats

Two coats of a premium interior or exterior finish, cut in by hand at every edge, in the sheen that suits the room rather than the sheen that hides the least.

Paint

Daily clean-down

Tools and sawdust out of the space, drop cloths folded, floors vacuumed. We leave the house liveable at the end of every working day, not just at the end of the job.

Finish

Walk-through under real light

We walk the rooms with you at daylight and again with the lights on, mark the touch-ups, and do them before invoicing.

The sequence

How a carpentry & painting job runs

Carpentry goes first — you don't paint trim you're about to cut again. After that it's short and predictable, as long as nobody skips a step.

Exterior work in Massachusetts is weather-bound both ways: rotted trim gets replaced in whatever season it's found, but the paint goes on in the warm, dry stretch of the year. We won't put a finish coat on a wet or cold surface to hit a date — it will peel, and then it's both our problems.

    Walk the rooms

Free on-site estimate, Monday to Saturday, 3 to 5 PM. We count the rooms, the trim, any built-ins or repairs, and the real condition of the exterior wood, then write it down.

  2. 01

    Carpentry scope and colour

Trim, built-ins and any rot repair get scoped and built or fixed first. Colour consult included — we sample on your wall, in your light, because a chip under a store fluorescent lies.

  3. 02

    Protect and repair

Cover, move, mask, wash, patch, sand, caulk — including the new trim and any exterior wood we just repaired. Usually the longest phase, and the one worth paying for.

  4. 03

    Prime

The right primer for the surface — bare wood, fresh compound, new trim, stains, tannin-prone cedar, or a dark-to-light colour change.

  5. 04

    Two finish coats

Cut in by hand, rolled or sprayed depending on the surface, with proper dry time between coats instead of a rushed recoat.

  6. 05

    Reinstall, clean, walk

Hardware and fixtures back on, furniture back in place, site cleaned, punch list closed with you in the room.

Why 7 Days

What a carpentry & painting crew needs to get right.

01

Trim scribed to a hundred-year-old wall

Casing, base and crown are fit to the wall in front of us, not to a square that assumes the house is. That's the difference you see from three feet away for the next decade.

02

Hardware off, not taped over

Switch plates, hinges and hardware come off before we paint. It takes longer and it shows.

03

Colour tested on your wall

We sample in the actual room and look at it morning and evening. North-facing rooms in New England make warm colours go grey.

04

Cleaner than we found it

Twenty-one years of working in occupied houses. The site gets cleaned down every day, not once at the end — sawdust included.

on Angi

“I hired 7 Days Remodel & Contracting to replace my deck and repair the front porch. I also needed new kitchen and bathroom flooring and tile on the kitchen counter and upstairs bathroom. Al and his team were extremely professional and multitasked to complete interior and exterior while I was away on military orders. Pleasantly surprised and extremely satisfied with the outcome and highly recommend them — Al communicated consistently throughout the process and completed the work as discussed prior to my return and on budget.”

“The job was done in a timeframe that was shorter than projected. Their team was very professional and did a great job cleaning up behind themselves.”

Straight answers

What people ask about carpentry & painting.

Can you build custom built-ins or shelving?

Yes — bookcases, mudroom benches, closet systems and mantels, built to your room's actual dimensions. We scope it at the estimate along with any trim or painting in the same space.

Do you repair rotted trim or siding before painting?

Yes, and we'd insist on it even if you didn't ask. Painting over rotten wood hides the problem for a season and then it's worse. We replace or repair it as carpentry, then prime and paint it as new wood.

Can you hang new interior doors?

Yes — door, casing and hardware, scribed to the opening. It's one of the most common small carpentry jobs we run alongside a painting project.

How long does painting an interior take?

A few rooms is usually two to four working days including prep. A whole floor or a whole house is a week or more. Prep is what moves the number, and we itemize it so you can see where the hours go.

Do I need to move out?

No. We work in occupied houses constantly. We do one area at a time, protect the route in and out, and clean the space down at the end of each day.

Do you supply the paint?

Yes, and we'll tell you which line we're using and why. If you'd rather buy the paint yourself, that's fine too — we'll spec exactly what to get.

When can you paint the exterior?

Exterior painting in Massachusetts runs in the warm, dry part of the year. Surface temperature and moisture decide the schedule, not the calendar — we won't coat a cold or damp surface just to hit a date. Exterior carpentry repairs can happen in more seasons than the paint itself.

My house was built before 1978. What about lead paint?

We don't do de-leading — that requires a licensed deleader. If we suspect lead on a surface we'd be disturbing, we stop and tell you before we sand or cut anything.

Can you paint kitchen cabinets?

Yes, and it lives or dies on prep: doors off and labelled, hardware removed, degreased, sanded, bonding primer, then finish. Ask about it at the estimate so we can look at the doors first.
